The Skills Training to Advance Immigrant Youth (STAIY) Program is the youth employment program offered at Regina Immigrant Women Centre. The Program runs for a duration of 14 weeks; three weeks in class and eleven weeks in a Work placement. The objective of the Program is to provide each participant an opportunity of Canadian Work Experience that will lead either to a permanent position with the placement host, or return to an educational program that will enhance their present and acquired skill sets to meet future career objectives.
There are three classes per year with six participants in each class. Participants are selected after an interview and screening by the Project Coordinator.
Each participant is paid minimum wage for both classroom and placement hours.
Participants must complete time sheets and work on a Team Project that they and their placement hosts have a copy at the end of the Program. Both participant and placement host receive Certificates of Completion.
Success rates have ranged from 95 – 100% based on each participant’s individual skills, education, and determination.
- Participants must be under the age of 30 years
- Must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident
- Must be committed to attend class and placement each and every day for 14 weeks.
Classes run from 9:15 am to 3:45 pm each day for the first three weeks of the Program, followed by the Work placements that follow the same hours and run Monday through Thursday (participants return to the classroom on Fridays to debrief and discuss work placement topics that are relevant to their placement and long term career success).
